Cover Letter

Dear Wilde and literature fans,

This website is a compilation of two thing: an overview/my interpretation of Oscar Wilde’s short story The Nightingale and the Rose, and the work I’ve completed for my English 170w class. Included in what I’ve posted on The Nightingale and the Rose is a summary, character overview, setting analysis, about Oscar Wilde, and a few assignments that cross over into my work for the class which is mainly the conference project. Along with this, included in the class work I’ve posted are different perspectives on interpreting literature: Freudian dream-work, Semotician perspective, New Critical perspective, etc.

In creating this compilation of my work into a single component that ties together, I had to do a few things. Firstly, I changed the theme. Due to some last minute oppositions to my original theme, I chose something a little more fitting and presenting.

In the course syllabus, it states

  • Recognize and use a variety of critical strategies in reading and writing about texts, such as close reading, formalism, structuralism, psychoanalysis, and reader-response.

I believe I achieved this objective through my own close readings, reader responses, etc. in my own posts. I think I grasped all of the concepts and theories well and gave thoughtful and logical responses.

  • Develop and use strategies for improving writing and critical thinking through recursive practice, self-reflection, and the process of revision.

I definitely employed thing objective well in my final entries. I revised my own work, and found where my arguments were weak or vague, and clarified my ideas. I was able to do so by the practice I received by the writing throughout the semester. As time went along, the better my writing got.

I believe that you, the reader, will enjoy the final product, the fruit of my labor. And I hope you understand Oscar Wilde that much more.

Lindsay 🙂
